HISTORY OF CLOCOLAN...

Driving on the R26 about 35km west of Ficksburg you will find Clocolan.  The town was established on two farms named Rienzi and Harold in 1906.  The first South Sotho people that lived here prior to that era were the Kwena with captain Mohlomi.  These surrounding mountains don’t have a “fight” connotation in vain.   The name Clocolan was derived from the Basotho word Hlohlowane which means to fight while you are working.  Clocolan is park to a peace of land that was won from Lesotho during wars in the early 1800’s.  Since the 1850’s white setlars started farm and today the area is renowned for wheat, corn, cattle, sheep and also cherry farms.

The oldest house in town was bult in 1911 and the town hall dates from 1916.  In days gone by formal functions and political meetings were held in the town hall and during week-ends it was used as a bioscope.  Here numerous fundraising events ere held, and these used to be grand affairs.  Today it is used as a church.  Only a year after the town hall, the Anglican sandstone church with its Gothic windows were built.  Due to its design there are rumours that this could have been a design by Sir Herbert Baker – but there is no proof as such available.

Since 1989 one of Clocolan’s annual highlights is the Veteran- tractor and enjin show.  This is planned for the week-end from 4 – 6 March.  During the show Tractors from all over are brought together and are judged according to catagory.  This happens on the Thursday and on Friday the tractors are paraded through town.

Showtime also means the annual national ploughing contest is held – a rather fun-filled event.  Experience the working of antique farm mashinery.

Rare items that you will find are a Hart-parr dating from 1936, a 923 Fordson-F as well as a John Deere H dating from 1939 that was built for vegetable farming.
